Lutein is known to be found in the retina and lens of the eye and is thought to protect the eye from injury induced by free radicals–chemical byproducts that have been shown to damage cells and contribute to the development of certain diseases. Lutein may also act as a filter for harmful blue light and help prevent damage from the sun.
Lutein supplements are sometimes marketed to prevent other conditions, such as colon cancer, breast cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.3 However, there is not enough research to support this. There's also some evidence that lutein supplements may have a role in eye health.
