TBHQ, also known as tertiary butylhydroquinone, is a preservative. It is used to extend the shelf life of foods. More specifically, it is a synthetic antioxidant that is used to preserve fatty or oily foods. With the antioxidant propertym TBHQ can eliminate the oxygen content of foods to keep food and beverages from going stale or becoming unappetizing.
TBHQ is found in various processed foods, such as instant noodles, fried foods, snack crackers, frozen foods, even lots of fast foods.
